Along with the other Michelin Gourmand winners saturated in the west area (who said east side best side again?), Joo Siah Bak Kut Teh is a must-visit coffee shop for anyone who loves a hearty, flavorful meal. Although tucked away in a rather inaccessible part of Singapore, this humble store has become a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. In fact, we once saw an MP eating there!

As the entire coffee shop is dominated by Joo Siah, you’re greeted with the delicious aroma of their signature dish: Bak Kut Teh.

This traditional pork rib soup ($6 for small) is cooked with a blend of herbs and spices that creates a mouthwatering broth that is both savory and aromatic. While there are many variations to Bak Kut Teh, this peppery version is unique to Singapore and something we can actually call ours! Joo Siah has done us all proud with their rendition of our signature dish.

The pork ribs are fall-off-the-bone tender and are accompanied by a generous portion of white rice and a variety of sides such as fried fritters, pickled vegetables, peanuts and braised beancurd.

The flavors are well-balanced, with the savory broth complementing the sweetness of the meat perfectly. Don’t forget to refill with hot piping soup when you’re done with your bowl!

In addition to the Bak Kut Teh, Joo Siah also offers a variety of other dishes that are equally delicious. The braised pig trotters are a must-try for anyone looking for a more adventurous dish. It is my guilty pleasure as the fatty meat melts in your mouth, and the sauce is well seasoned with a tinge of sweetness from its dark sauce.

The coffeeshop is always busy, but the service is fast and efficient. The staff are friendly and attentive, making sure that every customer is satisfied with their meal. I think they have about 5-6 people helping out, which explains the efficiency despite being a stall in a coffee shop.

I have to admit that I was slightly upset I can no longer gate keep my favourite Bak Kut Teh place of all times but since the secret is out, I can finally confess my love for Joo Siah. The prices are reasonable, the portions are generous, and the flavors are unforgettable. In fact, I never ate another Bak Kut Teh after Joo Siah, it is that good!
