Tiong Bahru Teochew Kueh is a hidden gem nestled within the bustling Tiong Bahru Hawker Centre. Specializing in traditional Teochew kueh, this stall offers a delightful range of steamed treats that will transport you back to the flavors of yesteryears since 1974.

With its unassuming presence, Tiong Bahru Teochew Kueh may not catch your eye right away with its same old signboard with absolutely no photos. However, once you’ve tried their kueh, you’ll understand why it’s worth seeking out. As you approach the stall, you’ll see the skilled artisans crafting the kueh right before your eyes, a testament to their dedication to preserving the traditional handmade methods.

The variety of kueh on offer is impressive. From the classic soon kueh (turnip dumplings) to the colorful and chewy kueh lapis (layered cake), each item is carefully made with precision and passion. One of my personal favorites is the glutinous rice, a rare find nowadays that still serves it simply steamed with fried onions and nothing else. The combination of textures and flavors is simply delightful.

Unfortunately it was sold out that day and we went for the classic peng kueh ($1.40) and soon kueh ($1.40). The peng kueh was packed with freshly fresh fragrant rice except that it was not steaming hot like that one from Jurong East since they don’t pan fry or keep in the steamer.

The kueh at Tiong Bahru Teochew Kueh is not only delicious but also aesthetically pleasing. All of the kuehs are on display in a glass display, and you can see them disappearing one by one as the day goes by.

What sets Tiong Bahru Teochew Kueh apart is the quality of its ingredients. The fillings are flavorful and well-seasoned, and the rice flour used for the wrappers is soft and delicate. It’s evident that the stall takes pride in using fresh and authentic ingredients, resulting in kueh that truly captures the essence of Teochew cuisine.

While the queue at Tiong Bahru Teochew Kueh can be long, the wait is well worth it. The friendly and efficient aunties work diligently to serve customers as quickly as possible. Plus, the anticipation only heightens the enjoyment of each kueh made with love.
