Although better known for its electronics, there lies a hidden gem tucked away in the corner of Sim Lim Square. Other than JJ Lin’s favourite Bar Chor Mee at the food court, there is a lesser known Zi Char – Taste Good Kitchen. It is literally at the corner of Sim Lim Square, so keep the faith and continue walking! You will be greeted by a swarm of people enjoying some local delicacies on humble tables and chairs.
What We Had at Taste Good in Sim Lim Square
The menu offers a variety of different Zi Char dishes, mostly paired with rice. Their signature dish was the Salted Egg Yolk Chicken w/ Rice ($5.90), in which we topped up for a fried egg ($0.60).
The first thing that stood out for us was the salted egg yolk gravy that took up almost half of the plate. Typically, the gravy of salted egg dishes are sparse and just enough to coat the meat it comes with. However, because there was so much gravy here, we could easily mix the white rice with the gravy! You will definitely avoid that tragedy of eating plain white rice towards the end of the meal (which we are all too familiar with).
Not only that, the chicken pieces were big and not heavily coated with fried batter. There was enough chicken to go around and the ratio of rice to chicken was just right. It was also a good move to add the fried egg which was perfectly fried and runny.
Do note that the salted egg sauce here tastes more buttery than real salted egg yolk. For hard core salted egg fans like me, you would wish there was a little more of that salty taste rather than sweet butter, but the others found it better as it is less gelat, especially if you have it in a large quantity like that.
If you love all things salted egg, then this is definitely worth a try! They are currently having a 10% promotion for all of their signature dishes (Salted Egg Chicken included), PLUS, if you come before 11am there is free coffee and tea!
