When I think of Beef Wellington, I think of Hell’s Kitchen, Bread Street Kitchen…and all things expensive. But Meet 4 Meat has recently gained fame for making this gourmet food affordable (to a certain extent). $30 for Beef Wellington? That has got to be the cheapest Beef Wellington in Singapore. (But let us know if there are cheaper ones out there?)
Situated in an unassuming coffeeshop that is well hidden in a row of well-furnished cafes, Meat 4 Meat is a stall set up by 2 chefs with a shared passion for affordable gourmet food. Their signatures are Beef/Duck Wellington, Pork Tomahawk and Lamb, each served with side salad and fries/potato. Although we didn’t get to see the actual cooking process, one of their selling points is that their meats are charcoal-grilled, and pastas are hand-made with love.
To get the best of everything, we highly recommend the Signatures Combo for one ($30). You can choose from a set of 2-boned lamb cutlets and 100g beef or duck wellington, or a combination of both the duck and beef wellington at 100g each. Both options come with a serving of baked potato/fries and a side salad. Definitely a spread for one if you ask me! Could possibly be enough to share between 2 which makes it really affordable.
The 100g beef wellington that we opted for looked smaller than what we see on Hell’s Kitchen, but bear in mind we went for the 100g and not the usual 180g. It came in an uncut round ball that was rather perfectly shaped and easy to cut into. The buttery crust was soft and flakey so it was pretty good just on its own. We found that the crust to beef ratio was good too, such that almost every bite came with a bit of beef.
The star of the show was really the medium rare beef loaf, that was well seasoned and melted in our mouths. However, if you are someone who prefers your beef well-done, I am afraid this is not for you (and we possibly cannot be friends either). The meat loaf was just the right fattiness, enough to melt in your mouth but not so much that it was oily.
We came for the beef wellington and thought we would try the lamb cuts as a bonus. To my surprise, as someone who doesn’t even usually like lamb, I found myself going back for second helpings! The usual gamey taste I absolutely detest from mutton was extremely faint. The meat from the bones were so soft that they fell right off the bone. The only thing not to my liking was the sweet marinate. I am not sure if it came from the salad dressing but some parts of the lamb were too sweet and almost felt like I was having a dessert. It could also be the case where the marinate was not evenly distributed so it got too overwhelming at some parts.
I would say Meet 4 Meat lived up to its hype and gave other high end restaurants a run for their money. Of course, you should not expect Hell’s Kitchen’s quality for the price that you are paying but I did not feel like I was being served sub-par food at all. Especially since $30 is still a sum, I personally feel that the food is better than some cafes charging at the same price so definitely worth a try if you’ve always been eyeing that beef wellington for a long time.
