If you’re a fan of traditional Teochew kueh, then Lai Heng Teo Chew Kueh is a must-visit destination. This humble little eatery located in the heart of Singapore offers a range of delicious kueh that are freshly hand-made on the premises. We had to go check it out after hearing about its Michelin Gourmand award.
What sets Lai Heng apart from other kueh shops is their commitment to using only the freshest and highest quality ingredients in their recipes. You can see this dedication firsthand, as you watch the skilled chefs prepare and steam the kueh right in front of your eyes.
The kueh themselves are available in both fried and steam versions, with each offering its own unique flavor and texture. The fried kueh are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, while the steamed kueh are tender and moist. Both versions are affordable and filling, making them a great option for a quick and tasty snack.
One standout kueh is the Soon Kueh, which is stuffed with a savory mixture of turnips, mushrooms, and pork. The skin of the kueh is thin and chewy, which is really hard to perfect as it has to be strong enough to hold its fillings.
The combination of textures and flavors is simply divine, and it’s no wonder this dish is so popular. My recommendation is to have it steamed ($1.10) so you can keep the soft texture.
One more must-try dish at Lai Heng Teo Chew Kueh is their Peng Kueh (rice kueh). This dish is a steamed or fried rice cake stuffed with a mixture of glutinous rice. The filling is savory and flavorful, while the rice cake is soft and slightly chewy. Paired with chili and sweet dark sauce, it is all kinds of savoury and fragrant at once. We opted for the fried version ($1.30) which came out beautifully yellow crusted on the otherwise pink skin. However I thought that it looked better than it tasted as it became quite difficult to bite into, and also get stuck in my teeth. It was a big thing for me as Teochew kuehs are meant to be chewy!
If you’re a fan of savory rice cakes, then the Peng Kueh at Lai Heng is a must-try. It’s another example of the restaurant’s commitment to using fresh ingredients and traditional recipes to create delicious and affordable Teochew kueh. So be sure to add it to your order and enjoy it alongside their other tasty offerings.
Overall, Lai Heng Teo Chew Kueh is a fantastic choice for anyone looking for delicious, freshly-made kueh at an affordable price. Whether you prefer the fried or steamed versions, you’re sure to find something to love here. So why not stop by and experience the magic for yourself? Your taste buds will thank you.
