On a hunt for the best Hokkien Mee in Singapore, we paid a visit to Come Daily Hokkien Mee at Toa Payoh Hawker Centre Lor 1. Since 1968, Come Daily Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee has been serving juicy and saucey mee. The wet thick bee hoon and yellow noodles comb on a generous serving plate, just the photos are enough to make you salivate.
Don’t be deceived when you don’t see a queue at Come Daily Hokkien Mee – you got the right one, but hurry and place your order as the waiting time can go up to 45 minutes! Every order is placed and collected when your buzzer rings.
For the Hokkien Mee connoisseurs out there, you would know that we can broadly categorise them into either dry, or wet Hokkien Mee. As a fan of the saucey goodness, I was delighted to find that Come Daily serves them wet! A piping hot plate of mee ($5) with sufficient moisture probably due to the steaming of the noodles, that made it so soft such that it almost melts in your mouth.
The sambal chili was also a perfect addition to the Hokkien Mee. It gave it that extra kick and coupled with the sour lime, gave Come Daily’s Hokkien Mee more flavourful than ever.
There were also a few fleshy prawns in the mix, and slightly less pork lard which is a bit of a double-edged sword depending on your preference.
It took us a while to realise that but after happily wolfing down half the plate of Hokkien Mee, it got a little jelat. I personally thought that the wok hey taste didn’t come out because it was so wet that the Hokkien Mee didn’t get charred enough. As a result the taste was pretty one dimensional and can get a bit too much at the end.
Nonetheless, the stall owners were kind and humble despite being a bit of a celebrity here and the good news was, we got our food in 20 minutes despite being told it was going to take 45 minutes. Definitely helped in the enjoyment of the food!
