It is an abandoned factory… It is a hardware shop…It is Chye Seng Huat Hardware Cafe!
After rising to fame recently for its unique exterior and good quality coffee, it is not surprising to see a queue for the cafe despite its large seating area (both indoors and outdoors). For a modern and sophisticated feel, opt for the indoor seating. If you are more into the chill, laid back cafe setting, then you can choose to dine al fresco in their rustic courtyard.
What we had at Chye Seng Huat Hardware Cafe
While admiring the pretty interior and the equipment on display, we ordered a Flat White ($6.00) and an Iced Cappuccino ($7.50). CSHH houses PPP Coffee, a home grown specialty coffee roaster that prides itself for great coffee.
The Flat White was generously filled to the brim. The steamed milk was creamy and went well with the espresso. As expected from the highly-raved coffee, the espresso was not too acidic and went down smoothly with the milk.
With a roaster in house, I believe most of the coffee beans are freshly roasted, which explains the aromatic Iced Cappuccino. A tad pricey for the small cup, the Cappuccino was a little diluted and not as well combined as the Flat White. For a better blended iced white, you can try their popular White Cold Brew or Nitro on tap.
The Lemon Tart ($8.50) was difficult to resist as it was the centre of attention on the display shelf. Bright yellow, the filing was sour enough to make you scrunch up your face. I would recommend always taking every bite with the buttery crust to balance the sourness. Together, it was a perfect combination of sweet, sour and savoury.
Chye Seng Huat Hardware Cafe is a great cafe to chill and hang out due to its laid back ambiance. Just be prepared to pay a premium for its food but perhaps you can make your money’s worth by staying a little longer!
