Hidden at the end of the large Chinatown Food Complex is Chef Sham’s Fish Maw and Pig Stomach Soup – thick, creamy collagen soup going at an affordable price of $6.80 only! Nourishing thick soup has become quite a popular food option these days partly due to the rise of hotpot soup base from renowned places such as Beauty in the Pot. It is also regarded as a lower carb option by some if you go without rice so it is a popular lunch option for office workers.

In front of Chef Sham’s stall is a humongous pot of soup that is hard to miss. The soup is cooking constantly, extracting the essence of the chicken, pig soup and fish maw all at once. It is evident that the soup has been carefully boiled for long hours by the milky colour of the soup.

Despite going at such an affordable price, the soup has many ingredients – huge chunky chicken meat, pig stomach, fish maw and goji berries.

The chicken meat were mostly drumstick and wing meat, and while they were tender, I found that there was a bit too much skin. The pig stomach however, was exceptional! Despite being boiled in soup, it was not tough and still somehow managed to lock in the creamy broth. The stomach was always cleaned well with no stale taste. Would definitely be a deal breaker for me otherwise!

We also loved the fish maw that absorbed SO MUCH broth that it oozes out when you bite into them. The soup was also not too oily without the layer of oil you usually see in tonic soups.

This is by far one of the most affordable tonic soups I have tried. There are other specialty soup eateries or food court stalls that also sell Fish Maw and Pig Stomach soup, but for at least $8. If you are one of those that devour 10 bowls of soup at a hotpot restaurant, why not give Chef Sham’s soup a try for a way more affordable price?
