Niche Savoureuse – a name I still struggle to pronounce – is a cafe that sits quaintly in the neighbourhood of Toa Payoh. The cafe is known for their artisanal bakes while also serving quality coffees and brunch food. Being a cafe in a HDB neighbourhood, the exterior of Niche Savoureuse stands out compared to the neighbouring stores. It is the only store with a beautiful rustic look – wooden storefront with large glass window. You can’t help but peer in to have a look at what is going on inside.

Walking into the store, the first thing that welcomes you is the array of baked selection in a well lit glass fridge. We were spoilt for choice as everything looked delicious, but what caught our eyes in the sea of colours was a pure Dark Glass Dome with a Glossy finish – Black Diamond.

The Black Diamond ($7.90) is a Chocolate cake that is made with 66% Dark chocolate Sabayon with Kirsh Liquor Cherries and Feuilletine. The Black Diamond was not overly sweet as the bitterness of the dark chocolate evens it out. The mousse was dense, and cutting into the mousse, you will find pieces of cherry soaked in liquor and Feuilletine. Feuilletine are crispy confection made from crepes, and it’s delectable to eat with the mousse as it adds an extra crunchiness to the dessert.

We paired the Black Diamond with a cup of Hot Cafe Latte ($5). The Latte had a good mix of milk and espresso, not too acidic on the palate and goes well with a sweet dessert like the Black Diamond. Especially for a rich dessert, being able to balance the sweetness with caffeine is highly recommended.

While we did not try the brunch and mains, the bakes and coffee were satisfying enough to bring us back. Not to mention, the cafe also had a cosy interior and ambience made for a relaxing afternoon people (and dog) watching.
