Like a love story come alive, The Better Half is a dream cafe run by a power couple, Jonathan and Hwee Ying. They serve up fresh bakes and coffee in a tiny cafe a stone throw away from Outram Park MRT Station. The entire cafe is purely managed by the 2 of them, and nothing screams more homely than that.

All bakes are made with love by Jonathan, meant to be paired with coffee brewed by Hwee Ying. The bakery menu changes from day to day, and are all baked in-house.

The cakes and bakes were arranged beautifully on display, and the one that caught my eye was the Earl Grey Lavender Cake ($6.50). Its base is an Earl Grey Chiffon Cake, coated with cream and then topped with lavender leaves. The warm cake was moist when paired with the cream and melted in your mouth. We were just a little confused whether to also eat the lavender petals, but they were hard to chew so there were a lot of petals left.

As for the coffee, we went for a cup of hot latte ($5.50) to go with our cake. The cuppa was filled squarely to the brim, we were quite impressed that no coffee was spilled on its journey to us. With a pretty latte art pulled by Hwee Ying, the coffee was creamy and smooth and a perfect complement to the cake as it was not too sweet and milky.

With limited seating indoors, we picked a romantic spot decorated with fairy lights and flowers just outside of the cafe. It had a good ambiance and with a rotating bakes menu, there is something new to try each time.

We will drop by again if we are in the vicinity to try other bakes!
