It’s nice seeing cafes popping up in our HDB neighbourhood estates, conveniently located where we can get a quick coffee fix on the way to our destination. Brew & Co is situated right in the heart of Ang Mo Kio, serving up good coffee and pastries for the residents or those in its vicinity looking to wash down their meals with some good old cuppa.

At first glance, Brew and Co carries a wooden framed storefront, with similar coloured seating right outside. The cafe has 3-4 tables for those that would like to dine in. Walking in, the first few things that welcome you would be the beautifully displayed pastries and the aroma of coffee.

What we had at Brew & Co

Dirty Matcha Latte ($6)

Looking at the beautifully layered tricoloured drink, I never understood why it is called “dirty” matcha latte. The brown layer floating at the top would be espresso, followed by milk and then the Matcha sitting right at the bottom. Before drinking, we were told by the friendly staff to stir and mix it thoroughly.

I thought the dirty matcha latte would be a confusing experience, with two distinct flavours that may or may not go well together. But to my pleasant surprise, it was better than expected – this might just be my new favourite drink! The matcha is lightly sweetened to balance the overpowering bitterness of the espresso, and the milk allows both flavours to have a smooth transition. The espresso hits you first, but the matcha lingers on your tongue as an aftertaste. My companion preferred the traditional bitter matcha that was lacking here, but I personally thought it was a pretty good cup of latte – not too much like coffee or tea.

Brew & Co’s Black Cold Brew ($6.90)

If you are in need of caffeine to keep you awake, the Black Cold Brew might be something you ought to get. Steeped in cold water, the coffee has a mellow acidity and lingering sweet aftertaste. The cold brew is bottled and perfect for take-n-go, but if you are dining in, a cup of ice is provided to pour the cold brew into.

Yuzu Danish ($7.90)

Brew and Co also features pastries from other bakeries to go with the coffees. Our pastry of choice was the Yuzu Danish – a multilayered sweet pastry in the Viennoiserie tradition. The danish was dense and buttery, and the staff was kind enough to heat it before serving. The yuzu topping was a tad too sour for our liking, evident from our scrunched up faces with every bite. The pastry however was huge and definitely something for sharing.

In all, I do see myself patronizing Brew and Co for a cup of coffee on a lazy weekend morning. As for the pastries, perhaps I could give the other choices a try.
