Best known for its tagline – Cheapest Michelin Food, Hawker Chan, or Liao Fan sells michelin-grade Soya Sauce chicken rice/noodles. In fact, it is the world’s first ever hawker stall to be awarded a Michelin star. Going at just $3 for a plate of Soya Sauce Chicken rice, it is no wonder that there were long queues and even a designated queueing area at its Chinatown Food Complex stall.

We visited its flagship stall at Chinatown Food Complex, where they first started. Since then, Hawker has already opened a few outlets across the island, namely at Tai Seng, Tampines, and a shophouse just across the food complex. Although the queue was rather long, they were efficient in taking and preparing orders and our queue moved quickly. Total wait time was about 20-25mins on a weekend lunch.

Probably due to convenience and the volume of order, our Soya Sauce Chicken Rice ($3) came on a disposable styrofoam plate (not great for photos unfortunately). However, what was great on camera was the pile of tender chicken meat coated with shiny chicken skin! The white meat could be easily torn apart because of how soft it was – definitely not overcooked. You have to throw aside your new year resolution for a minute – the chicken skin is a must-have! They were well braised with savoury sweet soya sauce that were so smooth, they glide down your throat. It might be a good idea to ask for chicken thigh meat if you are not a fan of bones. Perhaps we were unlucky but almost half of our chicken had bones.

The rice that came with it was white rice drizzled with sweet gravy and paired very well with the chicken. Feel free to ask for more gravy as there is probably not enough chicken to go around and you wouldn’t want to have plain white rice at the end. Alternatively, you can also opt for its egg noodles.

Besides the soya sauce chicken, Hawker Chan also offers glistening Char Siew and Roasted Pork, which would be a great addition to its smooth skinned chicken.

$3 for Michelin food? I would say yes every time! It is really value-for-money even if Hawker Chan didn’t have a Michelin star. I suggest going RIGHT NOW before inflation catches up.
