O Happi Place is a hidden gelato parlour in the estate of Everton popular with its residents. It doesn’t just make your tastebuds “Happi”, but even the design of the little cafe is enough to bring a smile to your face. All gelato served at O Happi Place are slowly churned to retrieve the flavour essence. That means no artificial flavouring added and none of the things we can’t pronounce.

The gelato flavours were extraordinary! We had the fortune of talking to the boss of O Happi Place, who enthusiastically shared the stories behind the popular flavours. Sadly, the most popular flavour, Ju Pu was not available when we were there, but we had the Cereal Milk single scoop ($5.50) and Bon Bon with cone ($7). Both flavours were premium, and there was an additional $1 for the cone.

If you have never heard of Bonbon, it is a french dessert in the shape of a chocolate ball, usually filled with sweet liqueur. Inspired by the Bonbon, the Bon Bon gelato tasted like praline, wafer and hazelnut dipped in luxurious chocolate. I would say that the fragrance of the hazelnut was the most prominent of them all, and if you enjoy Ferrero Rocher you would enjoy this flavour too!

The Cereal Milk was hands down my favourite flavour. It was pretty magical to me, because despite the gelato being plain white, you can somehow taste the cereal in every bite! This flavour is a homage to the famous Cereal Milk at Momofuku Milk Bar in New York City. According to the founders of O Happi Place, it was love at first taste for them and they had spent a lot of effort recreating it so you and I can enjoy it in sunny Singapore. The process is still as tedious – caramelised cornflakes are soaked and strained to extract the essence used in the gelato.

I really enjoyed chilling by the alfresco porch and enjoying my gelato while chatting to the friendly owners of O Happi Place. You could see that almost everyone went to chat them up with big smiles. The only thing I thought could be improved was the cone, which are currently off-the-shelf and really not worth the top up, I feel. Not to worry, making their own cones is definitely in the pipeline once they have the capacity too and I will be sure to go back for more of their Cereal Milk. Don’t forget to take some instagrammable gelato shots and toilet selfies while you’re there!
