Ever heard of Ke Kou Mian of Bukit Panjang? The bowl of maggee mee that people is willing to queue hours for. This popular bowl of instant noodles is surrounded with mixed reviews, with some saying that it is overrated and others saying that it is worth the hype. With its odd opening hours of 3am to 12 noon, it attracts the after club goers, supper cravers or just kkm addicts willing to stay awake just to taste the noodles. You can expect yourself waiting hours in the wee hours for this bowl of noodles. Living in the west, I satisfy my supper cravings with this bowl of goodness. What is really addictive about kkm is the broth, rich and flavourful. The instant noodles soak up the goodness of the broth and maintains its springy texture.

What to Eat

Though there are alternatives like ban mian, mee hoon kueh or porridge, most people will no doubt opt for Ke Kou Mian.

The basic Ke Kou Mian is cooked with pieces of lean pork, minced pork, livers and a runny egg yolk. The meats were marinated and cooked to perfection, and the yolk adds extra richness to the soup after you break and mix it in. The Ke Kou Mian comes with crushed shallots, but you can ask for more. Personally I like my KKM filled with them, adding a hint of sweetness and increasing the richness of the broth.

If you’re not a fan of meat, you can go for the seafood Ke Kou Mian or the abalone clam Ke Kou Mian. They do sell spicy version of Ke Kou Mian but it packs too much of a punch for me.

Some might say that KKM is overrated, but still there is the crowd of people willing to stay up or drive all the way to bukit panjang just to satisfy their kekoumian cravings. As I stay only a short walk away from KKM, I wouldn’t mind heading down. If I were to be staying some where further, I would say, Nah it’s too much of a hassle to go all the way just to eat this bowl of instant noodles.
